Course description:

This practical course provides dental professionals with the knowledge and hands-on skills required to deliver safe, effective maintenance care for patients with dental implants. Delegates will learn systematic peri-implant assessment, evidence-based classification of peri-implant health and disease, and identification of risk factors associated with peri-implant complications and implant failure. The program combines focused clinical lectures with a skills workshop on instrumentation and decontamination techniques for implant surfaces, enabling clinicians to perform thorough maintenance visits with confidence.

Learning objectives:

• Perform a structured peri-implant clinical and radiographic assessment, including probing, bleeding on probing, suppuration, mobility, and radiographic bone-level evaluation.

• Differentiate peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis using current classification systems and diagnostic criteria.

• Identify local and systemic risk factors that contribute to peri-implant disease and implant failure, and apply risk-based strategies to personalise maintenance intervals and interventions.

• Demonstrate safe, effective instrumentation and decontamination techniques for implant surfaces in a hands-on setting, including the use of instruments and devices compatible with implant materials and restorative components.

• Implement evidence-based maintenance protocols and recall strategies to prevent disease progression and optimize long-term implant outcomes.

Course format: Interactive lectures covering current evidence and clinical guidelines, case-based discussions, and a hands-on workshop focused on instrumentation, surface decontamination, and clinical workflow for implant maintenance visits.

• Peri-implant assessment: clinical and radiographic parameters

• Classification of peri-implant conditions and diagnostic thresholds

• Risk factors for peri-implant disease and implant failure (smoking, systemic disease, history of periodontitis, occlusion, prosthetic factors, maintenance adherence)

• Instrumentation and decontamination: hand instruments, ultrasonic and air-polishing options, antimicrobial adjuncts, and safe techniques around implant restorations (hands-on)

• Evidence-based maintenance protocols: recall intervals, monitoring, documentation, patient education, and referral criteria

Course outcomes: Delegates will leave with practical protocols and chairside skills to integrate implant maintenance into routine practice, improved ability to diagnose and classify peri-implant conditions, and confidence to apply evidence-based interventions and tailored recall strategies to reduce the risk of implant complications.
